Our School-day program with extended care operates year round (for breaks, please see our School Calendar), offering a twelve month program for our working families. We open at 7:30 AM and close at 5:25 PM. You may choose 3 days or 5 days per week options. The children are served a morning snack. Lunches are brought from home and the staff heats and opens containers and supervises the children during lunchtime. After lunch, all preschool children are required to nap/rest. Children may bring a favorite stuffed animal from home to cuddle with while they listen to classical music and lullabies. After nap, an afternoon snack is served.
Our school-day preschool children participate in our specialty classes in Spanish and fitness. These classes are taught by qualified specialists who join our classroom teachers for these weekly enrichment classes. Our special classes offer children the opportunity to explore other languages through songs, games, and other age appropriate activities. We also include cooking, Art classes and Library throughout our school year. Country Day Preschool children are exposed to many enrichment areas not normally offered to young children. For example: The Project Approach which refers to a set of teaching strategies that enable our teachers to guide children through in-depth studies of real world topics. The Project Approach is not unstructured. There is a complex but flexible framework with features that characterize the teaching-learning interaction. When teachers implement the Project Approach successfully, children can be highly motivated, feel actively involved in their own learning, and produce work of a high quality. We feel research is clear on the benefits of these activities for young people.
Our program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is an integral part of our school through eighth grade program. Children who participate in our program go successfully into our primary school or into other schools in the area, both public and private. A number of our children move to other parts of the country or even the world. They traditionally do very well and are prepared to adapt to almost any environment.
Athens State and UAB both use The Country Day School as a lab school for graduate and undergraduate students studying Early Childhood Education.
